Why You Should Visit Ottery St Mary
Ottery St Mary is one of the oldest and most historic towns in Devon. The town is the birthplace of poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834).
Ottery St Mary is a small town with many shops, bed and breakfasts, hotels and restaurants. The town has a public tennis court, playing fields and cricket club.
In the center of town is the church of St Marys. The town centre is aged and the surrounding homes are modern as can be seen in this photograph taken at Longdogs Lane.
One of the most well-known events at Ottery St Mary occurs every year on November 5th (Guy Fawkes Day). On this day the Flaming Tar Barrels are carried through the streets, and the town has a bonfire that burns Guy Fawkes in a fire reaching more than 30 feet high. This is an event that should not be missed.
